Carey's balsamroot (Balsamorhiza careyana) - With its large, bright yellow flowers, Carey's balsamroot (left) is easy to spot in mid-to late spring. This perennial forb is common in both shrub lands and grasslands and prefers deep, sandy-loam soils. Its leaves are large, heart-shaped and shiny, and its showy blooms may stand more than 17 inches in height.
