Spiny hopsage (Grayia spinosa) - This deciduous, perennial shrub occurs in areas with alkaline, gravely or heavy clay soils and may grow to 4 feet in height. Its leaves are small, gray-green and taper slightly to a point at the tips (lower left inset). This is a dioecious shrub, meaning the male and female flowers are borne on separate plants; the small, clustered, pale yellow flowers appear from late spring to early summer.
