Blazing star (Mentzelia laevicaulis) - This showy lemon-yellow flower derives its name from its characteristic 5-petaled star-like appearance, and its multitude of long yellow stamens which blaze out from the center of the star. Blazing star is a short-lived perennial plant, and usually grows 1-2 feet tall, with multiple branches and flowers. Its leaves are oblong with deeply toothed edges, and are covered with sharp bristles. It is a mid to late summer bloomer, and grows in dry sunny areas, such as talus slopes, gravely sagebrush plains, and in sandy areas along the rivers.
