Bottlebrush squirreltail (Sitanion hystrix) - One of the most interesting grasses of the shrub-steppe, this perennial is easy to identify by the characteristic bottlebrush appearance of its floral head. Its spikelets are large and bushy, with sprays of long, soft bristles that extend vertically from the spikelets. The leaf blades are long and flat or folded, and fairly tough. Bottlebrush squirreltail ranges from 4 to 24 inches in height, and can be found in dry and rocky to moist soils. It can be seen from May to July.
