  • Morphology: Crustose. Thallus (the lichen body) is usually not visible, Apothecia (disc shaped fruiting body) are always present.
  • Color: Yellow-orange, orange to rusty red.
  • Reproductive Structures: Apothecia can have a margin that has the same or different color as the as the structure itself.
  • Habitat: Soil, humus, tree trunks.
  • General information: Some Caloplaca species found in western Washington are fruticose to foliose. The orange color is due to the presence of parietin.
