Aerial Assessments of Fall Chinook Salmon Spawning Habitats

Battelle has been conducting aerial observation and aerial photogrammetric surveys within the Priest Rapids Pool and the Hanford Reach of the Columbia River to document spawning of fall Chinook salmon. The aerial images are digitized and mapped to obtain precise redd locations, elevations, and determine the degree of overlap. Aerial observations from weekly flights are used to determine the general spawning locations, annual redd index, and peak spawning periods. Products from this research have been valuable in managing discharge from hydroelectic dams to protect spawning salmon from dewatering and determine current spawing regions.
