Snake River Fall Chinook Salmon Spawning Surveys

The purpose of this project is to determine the extent of spawning by ESA listed fall Chinook salmon in the tailrace sections of the four lowermost Snake River dams. The surveys are conducted using a boat deployed video system. This project, funded by the US Army Corps of Engineers (Walla Walla District), has been ongoing since 1993. Using this unique system, salmon redds can be detected and mapped in water depths ranging from 2-9 m. Another aspect of this project is to assess any impact to fall Chinook spawning by periodic dredging of the shipping channel or in-water construction projects by the Corps. Surveys utilize the latest in video technology in which several parameters can be collected, including high resolution substrate imagery, substrate size, bed and column water velocity, and detailed bathymetric maps. Using the information obtained by this system, detailed habitat maps are generated which includes all physical suitable parameters in which salmon utilize during spawning. Information gathered during these surveys is provided to federal agencies and in turn flow regimes can be put in place to enhance and protect these populations.
