Biography

Dr. Brown is a senior research scientist and his research focuses on fish ecology and physiology, bioengineering and biophysics. He studies the effects of passage through hydroturbines and other water management structures on the physiology of fish from North America and a variety of other regions such as Asia and Australia. This research is aimed at determining more accurate estimates of survival through turbines, identifying optimal turbine operations for fish and aiding in the design of more fish friendly turbines and other water management structures. Dr. Brown's research involves the development and application of acoustic and radio telemetry technology. He is studying the influence of surgical implantation techniques of transmitters on physiology, survival and behavior of fish. He also continues to examine the winter ecology of riverine fish. Dr. Brown's projects have included studying overwintering of anadromous fish along the north slope of Alaska, research on barotrauma in the Asia-Pacific Region, examining relationships between riverine fish and river ice, bull trout behavior using radiotelemetry, use of electromyogram telemetry to indicate spawning behavior of adult salmon, and examining behavior of juvenile salmonids using 3D acoustic telemetry. He is an active mentor of student researchers who are interested in fisheries science and is an adjunct professor with the University of Washington.
