Chandler Canal Low Water

PNNL used a combination of water velocity measurements, hydraulic modeling, and sensor fish deployments to determine how changes in canal flow influenced the variables that are considered in the NOAA Fisheries fish passage criteria for the Chandler Canal. We determined that the facility was generally in compliance with criteria, with the exception of a few 'hot-spots'. Sensor fish data also showed that passage conditions through the fish bypass would not be expected to result in significant injury or mortality. The CFD model was used to illustrate how small structural modifications at the facility could improve passage conditions for fish under a wide range of flows.
